Thomas Bartnikas

Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Associate Director of the MD-PhD Program

The Bartnikas laboratory studies the role of iron, manganese, and other essential yet potentially toxic metals in health and disease. Our goal is to establish the fundamental biological mechanisms by which organisms acquire, distribute, and excrete metals at the whole animal and cellular level. We accomplish this using cell- and animal-based models of inherited human diseases of metal excess and deficiency and a variety of molecular, genetic, pharmacologic, and physiologic techniques.
