Professors Arlene Cole and Mark Steinbach Visit Xi'an, China

Arlene Cole, Asst. Prof. of the Practice in Music and Mark Steinbach, University Organist and Senior Lecturer in Music at Brown were invited by the Xi'an Conservatory of Music in Xi'an, China, for a five day residency as part of the Sino US Solfeggio Academic Exchange in National Art Colleges, May 8-12, 2018. Both Cole and Steinbach taught masterclasses at the conference, which included students and faculty from conservatories throughout China. Arlene Cole also served as clinician for the annual sight-singing and musicianship competition.

Congratulations, Esther Kurtz, Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at Washington University

Esther Kurtz, who received her Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Brown this year, is about to begin an assignment as Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in the Department of Music at Washington University in St. Louis. She will be teaching two courses a semester in topics such as American Popular Music, Ethnographic Methods and Ethics, and Jazz History, as well as continuing to develop her research on capoeira Angola in Brazil. Congratulations and best of luck, Esther!

Wang Lu's Urban Inventory Reviewed by The New Yorker

"I’ve listened at least a dozen times to the composer Wang Lu’s new album, 'Urban Inventory' (New Focus Recordings), and remain happily lost in its riotous maze of ideas and images. Every moment is vividly etched, drenched in instrumental color, steeped in influences that range from ancient Chinese folk music to the latest detonations of the European avant-garde. A starry array of ensembles, including the Ensemble Intercontemporain, Alarm Will Sound, and the International Contemporary Ensemble, bring the music to rambunctious life.

Mark Seto Hired as the New Director of the Brown University Orchestra

The Department of Music is proud to announce conductor, musicologist, and violinist Mark Seto as Director of the Brown University Orchestra effective July 1, 2018. In addition to bringing his vast experience as an educator and orchestra director to the classroom and stage, Seto will assist in the development of Brown’s new Performing Arts Center. Seto comes directly from Connecticut College where he was Associate Professor of Music and director of the Connecticut College Orchestra.
