Lu Wang and and Polly Apfelbaum to debut "the Sound of Ceramics" September 30

The Sound of Ceramics is a musical/sculptural collaboration. The composer Wang Lu, an assistant professor of music at Brown, and Polly Apfelbaum, an artist living in New York, met at the American Academy in Rome in 2012. This is their first collaboration. Polly Apfelbaum has constructed a sculptural installation using simple ceramic geometric shapes and clay bead mallets which Wang Lu and her students will use to compose and orchestrate two performances. The shapes which hang in the gallery were influenced by Harry Partch’s instruments, the early American shape-note tradition, and ancient Chinese hanging bronze and stone bells. Wang Lu has prerecorded and sampled the sounds produced by the hanging shapes, which will interact with a live performance by herself and a group of students.
