A history of western European music to Monteverdi's Orfeo
(1607), with emphasis on the analysis of individual works supported by reading and listening. Among the major composers studied are Byrd, Dufay, Josquin, Machaut, and Palestrina. Strongly recommended for freshmen and sophomores considering a concentration in music. Limited to students who can read music. Prerequisite: MUSC 0550 or permission of instructor.
