David Rubinstein, Viola
David Rubinstein received his B.M. from the New School of Music as a student of Jascha Brodsky. He continued his Masters studies at the New England Conservatory of Music as a student of Walter Trampler. David has also studied with David and Linda Cerone, and studied chamber music with Orlando Cole, Eugene Lehner, Eric Rosenblith, Colin Carr and Lois Krasner. David was an orchestra fellow of both Tanglewood Institute and the Spoleto Music Festival.
As an orchestra musician, David was a substitute violist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops, and has toured Europe, South America, Asia and the United States with both those groups. David was a member of the Boston Pops Esplanade orchestra for many years, and was principal violist of the Boston Philharmonic, under Ben Zander, and the new music group Alea III. David has performed as recitalist and chamber musician with the Martha Vineyard chamber music society and the Atlanta Virtuosi.
David also teaches violin, viola and chamber music at the New England Conservatory Preparatory Department and is String Department Chair of the Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic. In the summers David has taught at the Killington Music Festival and the Foulgers International Music Festival. David has recently given Masterclasses at New York University, Penn State and Hartt School of Music.
David has led a viola ensemble here at Brown, performing pieces from 3 to 8 violas, and has organized a parent weekend concert of Bach’s cello suites performed by his students and danced with original choreography by students of the Brown Dance program. Kim Kashkashian has come down to lead a masterclass of David’s students as well. Many of David’s students have won the concerto competition at Brown performing Prokofiev’s 1rst Violin Concerto, Walton and Bartok Viola Concertos.
