In order to place into MUSC 0550: Theory of Tonal Music, students must take the assessment exam which will be administered online the first day of class. To place into MUSC 0550, students need fluency with notation, key signatures, scales, intervals, triads and rhythm. Keyboard skills are helpful, but not necessary. To practice for the exam, we suggest the following: https://libguides.brown.edu/music/theory#s-lg-box-13577392 or uTheory.com. You will need staff notation paper, and pencil for the exam which you will submit to Canvas. If you place into the course, you will also need to register for the requited labs which meet three times a week. The MUSC 0550 exam is offered at 1pm and 2:30pm. This will be your only opportunity to take this test for the Fall 2020 semester.
Students who don’t yet have the skills for MUSC 0550 can register for MUSC 0400A or MUSC 0400B (see below), which are offered every semester.
