Peer Mentoring Program
The New Scientist Peer Academic and Leadership (NS-PAL) provides 1-on-1 mentoring to underrepresented minority (URM) students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) concentrations.
NS-PAL Membership
- Coordinators are mentors who possess strong leadership and organizational skills. As leaders, they design and plan activities for the entire NSC community.
- Mentors must demonstrate their availability to create and sustain an atmosphere that is welcoming and supportive of their peers. Mentors must stay in their role for at least 1 year. Continuance in the program is contingent upon their commitment to this program.
- Mentees are 1st or 2nd-year students recruited through the NSC application. All mentees are expected to participate in program activities to aid them in excelling academically at Brown.
Learning Teams
Program Goal: To help New Scientist Collective (NSC) members and underrepresented minorities (URM) succeed in difficult STEM courses by fostering a spirit of collaboration and learning, guiding them in group discussions with a focus on encouraging students to learn from each other while doing the course homework assignments, exercises, and additional readings.
