Name: Shing Chau Leung

Degree: PhD Physics

Why did you decide to pursue a PhD program?

I came across a book about stars published by the local planetarium when I was very small. I was fascinated by the discussions about supernovae, white dwarfs, neutron stars and blackholes in the book. Since then, I decided to embark on the journey of physics research. Eventually through a lot of hard work, I became a PhD student at Brown!

What research did you work on?

My work focuses on answering questions about dark matter, working with Prof. JiJi Fan. Our most recent endeavor is to investigate the relation between dark matter detection and astrophysical structures in the solar neighborhood.

What are your plans next?

I am going to look for opportunities in the industry. Industry research positions that use machine learning to investigate big data are something that I am interested in.

Favorite Physics course?

In general, I love the advanced graduate courses provided by Brown University. For example, the quantum field theory courses, string theory course and general relativity course provided by the HET group. I also like the advanced statistical mechanics course provided by Prof. Brad Marston.
