ABOUT: Zig Zag Power Trio harnesses the formidable creative energy and versatility of three extraordinary musicians: Will Calhoun (Living Colour, BB King, Mos Def, Mick Jagger, Wayne Shorter, Dr. John), Melvin Gibbs (Rollins Band, Femi Kuti, Eddie Palmieri, Bernie Worrell, John Medeski), and Vernon Reid (Living Colour, Public Enemy, Jack Bruce, The Roots, DJ Spooky). As members of Living Colour, Calhoun and Reid received two Grammy Awards.

  • TALK: Friday March 2, 6:30 PM, Watson Institute, Joukowsky Forum
    Percussionist Will Calhoun, most widely known as the drummer for the multiple Grammy-winning rock/funk band, Living Colour, will discuss his extensive travels across the Global South, focusing on his innovative use of percussion not only as a means of bridging cultures but also as a surprisingly effective tool for conflict resolution. Calhoun will be joined by his Living Colour bandmate, the guitarist Vernon Reid, and also by the bassist Melvin Gibbs, whose vast oeuvre features ethnographically-rich research on the cultures and music of the African diaspora in Brazil and across the Caribbean.

    Zig Zag Power Trio will be joined on saxophone by special guest, Stephon Alexander, a theoretical physicist, cosmologist, musician, and author known for blending the worlds of theoretical physics and jazz music at Fête Lounge.
