The Physics Department is pleased to announce the wonderful news that PhD student Rutendo Jakachira is a recipient of the prestigious Google PhD fellowship in Health Research and a secondary area in Algorithmic Fairness for her research on pulse oximetry.
"Google is pleased to confirm the recipients of the North American and European Google PhD Fellowships for 2023. These awards have been presented to exemplary PhD students in computer science and related fields. We have given these students unique fellowships to acknowledge their contributions to their areas of specialty and provide funding for their education and research. We look forward to working closely with them as they continue to become leaders in their respective fields." - Google
Rutendo tells Brown Physics that she is honored to receive this recognition. "Having our research on pulse oximetry recognized by Google has been a pinch-me moment. I was initially reluctant to apply but after some encouragement from my fellow lab members and research advisor, Professor Kimani C. Toussaint Jr., I applied on a whim only just making the submission deadline. I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to my recommenders for endorsing my application. I can’t thank them enough for the unwavering support that they have given me throughout my PhD journey."
