Income Segregation: Up or Down, and for Whom?

12-1 pm

PSTC Seminar Room 205

John Logan, Professor of Sociology, Brown University

The PSTC Colloquium Series will host John Logan, Professor of Sociology at Brown University. His talk is titled “Income Segregation: Up or Down, and for Whom?” and will challenge the estimates used in recent reports of rising income segregation in the U.S.

This research project uses confidential census data to demonstrate that reports of rising income segregation are flawed.  Findings show that family income segregation rose markedly in the 1980s but only selectively after 1990 or 2000.  The major problem in the reported upward bias in measures of segregation stems from the sample size.  In post-200 data sample sizes are only half of the size of earlier samples.  Logan and collaborators carried out more definitive analyses for the 1980-2000 decennial censuses and two subsequent five-year files from the American Community Survey.
