PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] – Former PSTC Director John Casterline has been named an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Casterline, a sociologist, was elected based on his “distinguished contributions to the field of social demography, particularly for studies of fertility, family planning and the demographic transition in developing nations in Africa.” Recognition as an AAAS elected fellow is one of the most prestigious honors given to scientists in the United States.

Casterline taught in the Department of Sociology at Brown from 1984-1994 and served as the PSTC director from 1992-1994. He is currently a professor of sociology at The Ohio State University, where he also serves as director of the Institute for Population Research. He is the current president-elect of the Population Association of America and will begin his term as president on January 1.

Casterline is scheduled to return to the PSTC to speak at the Center’s colloquium on March 14.
