Degree Programs

The concentration in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies is the study of the Portuguese-speaking world, a large and diverse geographical and cultural area spread over five continents, including Brazil, Continental and Insular Portugal, Lusophone Africa and Luso-America, and inhabited by two hundred million people.
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Program in Portuguese and Brazilian is advanced graduate study in the language, literatures and cultures of the Portuguese-Speaking World, with concentration on one or more the following areas: Brazil, Continental and Insular Portugal, Lusophone Africa, and Luso-America.

BRASIL/BRAZIL, founded in 1988, publishes scholarly articles on Brazilian literature and in Comparative Literature with a focus on Brazilian literature, as well as book reviews, interviews with writers, English language translations of Brazilian literature and original prose and poetry by Brazilian authors.

The e-Journal of Portuguese History (e-JPH) is an international peer-reviewed scholarly journal with the objective of providing publication of work on historical subjects, especially those concerning themes and topics of Portuguese history analyzed in a comparative perspective.

The mission of the Gávea-Brown: A Bilingual Journal of Portuguese-North American Letters and Studies (ISSN: 2641-0400) is to publish works relating to the Portuguese experience in North America. The scope is broad, including editorially reviewed academic articles, documents, interviews, translations, book reviews and creative works (both literary and visual).

Pessoa Plural—A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies (ISSN: 2212-4179) is an international peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to studies of Fernando Pessoa. It is published jointly by the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University, the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at Warwick University and the Department of Humanities and Literature of the University of the Andes.
