History and Mission
Gávea-Brown Publications was founded in 1980 under the auspices of the Center for Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University, with the purpose making Portuguese literature and culture better known in the English-speaking world. With such a broad and ambitious objective, its plan was to publish titles in such diverse areas as:
- translations of Portuguese literature;
- works relating to Portuguese Studies;
- original creative works, in English or in Portuguese, which in some way reflect the interactions of Portuguese and American cultures, particularly those offering insight into the experience of the Portuguese in the United States.
Gávea-Brown: A Bilingual Journal of Portuguese-American Letters and Studies / Revista Bilingue de Letras e Estudos Luso-Americanos
Now published online!
Current Issue: Volume XLII (2020).
The journal is published annually by the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University, and made possible with support from the Luso-American Development Foundation (FLAD). The journal, was founded in 1980 as part of Gávea-Brown Publications, publishes works relating to the Portuguese experience in the United States. The scope is broad, including editorially reviewed academic articles, documents, interviews, translations, book reviews, and creative works (both literary and visual). In 2018, the Gávea-Brown journal, until then published in print, shifted to online publication (in collaboration with the Brown Digital Repository) in order to expand access to Portuguese-American literature and studies.
If you are interested in submitting to Gávea-Brown, please familiarize yourself with the journal by reading past issues (those on the Brown Digital Repository are free to access). We ask that you review our submission guidelines before sending. We look forward to reading your work!
Submissions are open for the Spring 2021 issue.
