Gávea-Brown Publications

History and Mission

Gávea-Brown Publications was founded in 1980 under the auspices of the Center for Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University, with the purpose making Portuguese literature and culture better known in the English-speaking world. With such a broad and ambitious objective, its plan was to publish titles in such diverse areas as:

  1. translations of Portuguese literature;
  2. works relating to Portuguese Studies;
  3. original creative works, in English or in Portuguese, which in some way reflect the interactions of Portuguese and North American cultures, particularly those offering insight into the experience of the Portuguese in the United States, Canada, and North America generally.

Gávea-Brown Publications books can be found at the Brown Bookstore.  In addition, we periodically work with other publishers. For more information, please contact Onésimo Almeida.

Gávea-Brown Publications also publishes Gávea-Brown: A Bilingual Journal of Portuguese-North American Letters and Studies. For more information, visit the journal's page.
