The Tropical Coast: Florida Keys

Course enrollment will be available for this course once it is scheduled.

Course Description

Study with Brown University in Key Largo, Florida!

Brown University offers curious high school students a unique opportunity to explore marine biology, conservation, and leadership skills in the Florida Keys. Focusing on the ecology of three main coastal habitats-- coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrasses-- students will practice many of the methods and skills used by marine scientists. Leadership content is integrated into this immersive course, enabling students to develop and practice socially responsible leadership both during the program and beyond. Two service learning projects will further help students connect their learning to creating positive social change.

Participants will stay at the MarineLab (link to: http://marinelab.org/) located in the center of Key Largo. Introductory presentations, lab activities, and discussions will take place on site. Field trips will include kayaking at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and observing the unique ecosystems at Everglades National Park.

This course is ideal for students with interests in marine biology, field ecology, conservation, and environmental science.

Students should be physically prepared to swim, snorkel, or kayak almost every day as the weather permits.
