Congratulations to our graduating class of 2019!! The Department of Biostatistics celebrated its largest graduating class to date with a total of 30 graduating students! Our graduates included 2 Doctorates, 20 Master’s graduates and 8 undergraduate concentrators.
Yesterday, Brown’s School of Public Health Biostatistics' students celebrated Cinco De Mayo by participating in Providence’s Rhode Races! Representatives included Lauren Bergam, Gabriella Silva, Kexin Qu, Evon Okidi, Kevin Wu and his wife, Samantha Morrison, Isaac Zhao, Taylor Fortnam, Augustus Ge and Carolina Velasco Molina, to name a few.
Department Chair and Carole & Lawrence Sirovich Professor of Public Health and Professor of Biostatistics, Joseph Hogan, ScD, will present a lecture on “Building a Kenyan-US Partnership for Biostatistics Research and Training”. Dr. Hogan’s lecture will be made on Wednesday, 29 November 2017, 12:00 pm at the Alpert Medical School, as part of the University's Global Health Initiative.
New for the Spring 2018 semester, the Department is offering our newest Health Data Science course, PHP 2570, Health Data Science Case Studies. Instructed by Henry Ledyard Goddard University Professor of Biostatistics, Constantine Gatsonis, this course is designed to introduce students to the practice of data science in health-related fields via presentations and in-depth discussion of case studies of current or recently completed projects. The case studies will be selected to highlight important areas of research and health policy analysis.
Biostatistics Assistant Professor, Lorin Crawford, will be offering a seminar as part of the Data Science Initiative’s Community Engagement Colloquia. On Thursday, 9 November 2017, Dr. Crawford will be presenting “An Introduction to Approximate Kernel Regression Methods”. More information on Dr. Crawford’s talk, including location and time, can be found here.
On Friday, 6 October 2017, the Department hosted the “Scientific Inference in the Age of Data Science” symposium. Guest lecturers included Professor and Andrew Banks Family Chair Michael Daniels from the University of Florida’s Department of Statistics, Professor Francesca Dominici of Harvard’s Department of Biostatistics and Co-Director of Harvard University Data Science Initiative, and Maurice Falk Professor of Statistics & Computational Neuroscience Robert Kass from Carnegie Mellon University.
Third-year doctoral candidate, Ruoshui Zhai, received a travel award to attend the Medical College of Wisconsin’s 2017 BiostatMCW conference next week in Milwaukee. The award, which was open to “outstanding PhD students and new researchers (within 5 years of PhD)” recognizes Zhai’s work with Assistant Professor of Biostatistics, Roee Gutman, and is entitled “Optimal Sample Size for Cluster Randomized Trials Based on the Randomization Distribution.” Zhai's presentation will outline a novel simulation-based approach to calculated sample size for cluster randomizatio
The Department of Biostatistics is pleased to announce a special symposium on Scientific Inference in the Age of Data Science to honor the fundamental and singular contributions of Professor Constantine Gatsonis to the development of biostatistics at Brown University. The program will feature brief talks from three leaders in statistics and data science, and ample opportunity for Q & A from the audience. Provost Rick Locke, School of Public Health Dean Fox Wetle, and Professor Vince Mor will deliver opening remarks.
