Yesterday, Brown’s School of Public Health Biostatistics' students celebrated Cinco De Mayo by participating in Providence’s Rhode Races! Representatives included Lauren Bergam, Gabriella Silva, Kexin Qu, Evon Okidi, Kevin Wu and his wife, Samantha Morrison, Isaac Zhao, Taylor Fortnam, Augustus Ge and Carolina Velasco Molina, to name a few.
The School of Public Health held its annual Public Health Research Day, celebrating 20 years, on Thursday, 4 April 2019. An impressive 94 posters were displayed, representing research work of Undergraduates, Master’s, PhD, and Post-Doctoral trainees and students at this year’s event which took place at Brown’s Alumnae Hall on Meeting Street.
We are proud to report that the Department of Biostatistics was represented by 29 posters from Undergraduate Statistics Concentrators, Master’s students and PhD students and candidates!
Dr. Constantine Gatsonis was recognized last night by the Boston Chapter of the American Statistical Association (ASA) and honored as the Chapter’s 2019 Mosteller Statistician of the Year. This is an annual recognition by the Boston Chapter of the ASA considering individuals from academia, industry and government who have made exceptional contributions to the field of statistics and who have shown outstanding service to the statistical community.
Dr. Lorin Crawford is one of 126 early-career scholars named as 2019 Sloan Research Fellows. Dr. Crawford, who was appointed as Assistant Professor of Biostatistics in 2017, has been recognized with 3 other Brown faculty as early-career scientists and scholars chosen from over 70 U.S. and Canadian universities as the “next generation of scientific leaders”. “Sloan Research Fellows are the best young scientists working today,” says Adam F. Falk, president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
The Department of Biostatistics is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Christopher H. Schmid as chair of the Department effective 1 August 2018. Schmid has been with Brown since 2012 and is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Center for Evidence Synthesis in Health. Schmid succeeds Joseph Hogan, ScD in the position of chair. Before joining Brown, Schmid was on faculty of Tufts University School of Medicine where he served as Director of the Biostatistics Research Center and Associate Director of the Tufts Clinical and Translational Science program.
We are pleased to announce the promotion of Roee Gutman, PhD, to the position of Associate Professor of Biostatistics, with tenure. Dr. Gutman joined the Department of Biostatistics in 2011 following the successful completion of his PhD in statistics from Harvard University. Dr. Gutman completed his undergraduate degree in computer science and statistics and Master’s in statistics (summa cum laude, 2004) from Tel Aviv University. Dr.
Congratulations to Biostatistics graduating Master's student, Jerson Cochancela, who is being recognized by the School of Public Health with one of the three Master's of Public Health Impact Awards. The Graduate Awards recognize three exceptional Master's students (MPH, AM and ScM) for their impact in one or a combination of scholarship, service, citizenship and professional contributions.

Congratulations to Assistant Professor Adam Sullivan, recipient of the University’s Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching for 2018. Professor Sullivan will be honored at the University’s Awards Ceremony on 30 April.
Congratulations to Dr. Jon Steingrimsson, Assistant Professor of Biostatistics, who is a recipient of Brown University’s 2018 Salomon Award. Dr. Steingrimsson will be funded for his research proposal entitled “Deep Learning for Incomplete Data: Individualized Treatment Decisions for Breast Cancer Patients”.
