The Department is pleased to acknowledge two of our doctoral students, Yizhen Xu and Yi Zhao, who have been recognized by the American Statistical Association (ASA) during the ASA's 2017 student paper competition.
Dr. Constantine Gatsonis, PhD, Chair of Brown's Department of Biostatistics and Director of the Center for Statistical Sciences has been at the helm of a good number of clinical trials, providing these large studies with the statistical analysis on resulting data that has changed the way diagnostic imaging is used to manage patient care and affect outcomes.
It is with a great deal of appreciation and gratitude that we acknowledge the 22 years of passion, leadership, and vision of Henry Ledyard Goddard Professor of Biostatistics, Dr. Constantine Gatsonis, as he steps down as Chair of the Department of Biostatistics. While he remains a crucial member of the Department and its faculty as well as the Director of the Center of Statistical Sciences, we must acknowledge him as the forefounder of Biostatistics at Brown University and the pivitol role he played in the establishment of the School of Public Health.
On Tuesday, 17 January 2017, Mun Sang Yue successfully defended his dissertation entitled "Evaluation of Predictive Accuracy of Tests and Impact of Tests on Patient Outcomes." Mun Sang's Dissertation Committee, chaired by Henry Ledyard Goddard Professor of Biostatistics Constantine Gatsonis, included Christopher Schmid, Professor of Biostatistics and Tao Liu, Associate Professor (Research) of Biostatistics.

Brown's Department of Biostatistics, Dr. Roee Gutman, and Dr. Francesca Beaudoin, ED physcian at Rhode Island Hospital and Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Brown's Warren Alpert School of Medicine were joined by several Brown researchers to consider a timely and increasingly concerning topic - the effectiveness of opioids vs. NSAIDS in lowering the risk of chronic pain for those treated following a motor vehicle crash.
On Thursday, 10 November 2016, Mr. Paul Lamere will be presenting a Data Science Initiative lecture entitled “Diving Into Music Data”. Mr. Lamere is the Director of Developer Platform at Spotify and will be showing how the art of data mining can help make music choice recommendations and even create new music!

Bahar Erar-Hood, Biostatistics doctoral candidate, will present her dissertation defense on Friday, 26 August 2016. Her thesis is entitled “Whole Genome Regression for Modeling Gene by Treatment Interactions in Structured Populations”.
