Affiliate Titles

The School of Public Health departments may appoint faculty and professionals to affiliated titles. Please use the affiliate appointment checklist to process an appointment, reappointment or promotion for an affiliate of the School of Public Health. Appointees in these titles are without faculty voting rights.

Titles

Adjunct

Adjunct faculty are primarily employees of other institutions or corporations who provide specific educational, research, or consulting services to Brown. Full-time members of non-affiliated institutions may be considered for an adjunct appointment if they perform specific and defined functions in the department. Adjunct faculty shall not have voting rights in the department, the School of Public Health, nor Brown University, and may receive proportional compensation in accordance with guidelines established for full-time faculty. Determination of rank for adjunct faculty is subject to the same requirements as other categories of faculty titles. The designation “Adjunct” will precede the appropriate faculty rank. An example of a correct title is Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biostatistics. Appointments are for 1-3 years, at the department's discretion.

To process an Adjunct appointment, the department will need to submit the Adjunct Faculty Appointment Responsibilities Memo signed by the Department Chair and the prospective faculty member along with the person's CV for approval. Once approved by Faculty Affairs, the appointment letter along with a copy of the signed responsibilities memo will be sent to the faculty member.

H-1B Visa

The H-1B visa classification is for full-time teaching, research or staff appointments for the duration of a period of proposed employment for which secure funding is available. A department at Brown University must agree to sponsor an international scholar/ staff member before beginning the H-1B petition process. Scholars who are interested in petitioning for an H-1B visa should first consult with their department regarding their sponsorship of an H-1B visa. Once your department agrees to sponsor your H-1B visa and OISSS has deemed a position eligible for H-1B sponsorship, we will work directly with the hiring department to process the H-1B. If you are a scholar who is interested in H-1B sponsorship, please consult with your hiring department about possible sponsorship. Please keep in mind the H-1B petition process takes planning and time.

When OISSS receives all the required documents from the hiring department and the scholar it will take about 1 month to process the application forms. It takes an additional 3-8 months for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to approve a case from the date it receives an application. USCIS offers Premium Processing at an additional $1225.00, which can expedite the adjudication process. Typically with Premium Processing USCIS will issue a decision within 15 calendar days from the day they received the H-1B application.
