President Christina Paxson urged the audience to view gun violence as a public health crisis

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Hundreds of students and Providence community members gathered at Brown University on Wednesday morning to participate in the national school walkout.

The university’s main green overflowed with people who, despite the cold, were determined to stand in solidarity with the student survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida. Speakers at Brown and sought to mobilize students, teachers and residents to advocate for stronger restrictions on access to guns.

University President Christina Paxson urged the audience to view gun violence as a public health crisis, comparing the death toll of gun-related homicides to those from opioids and car crashes. Guns are “a clear and present threat to the public good,” she said. READ MORE
