Opening Reception: The Way of Strategy

Join the Center for Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage and the Creative Arts Council for an opening reception celebrating the installation "The Way of Strategy", by Fitt Artists in Residence Pedro Frank Gutiérrez Torres and Alexander Beatón Galano (Cuba). Their project, El Camino de la Estrategia (The Way of Strategy) is based on oral history, visual material of the environment of the inhabitants of the small town of Caimanera in their relations with this political, military and social phenomenon: the US military enclave usurped from their territory.  

The Installation will be on view through September 2014, in the lower atrium gallery of the Perry and Marty Granoff Center for Creative Arts.

Their residency is part of" Bringing Guantánamo Home" a series of events examining Guantánamo and issues relating to its past, present, and future, throughout September, 2014.

Alexander Beatón is a visual artist working in Guantánamo province, Cuba.   He and Pedro Gutiérrezcollaborate on the ongoing multi-media project "El camino de la estrategia" ("The Way of Strategy"), a reflection on the effects of the U.S. naval base on the inhabitants of bordering communities.  Beatón is a member of the Cuban artists' and writers' union (UNEAC) and has exhibited ten solo shows since 1990, as well as numerous group exhibitions.  

Pedro Gutiérrez is an artist and filmmaker who has produced twelve documentaries and many programs, music videos and short films for Cuban television.  He lives in Guantánamo, Cuba.  He and Alexander Beatóncollaborate on the ongoing multi-media project "El camino de la estrategia" ("The Way of Strategy"), a reflection on the effects of the U.S. naval base on the inhabitants of bordering communities.
