We acknowledge with great sadness the passing of Roger Mandle, President Emeritus of the Rhode Island School of Design and a great friend and supporter of the John Nicholas Brown Center of Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage. Roger had taught several classes for our MA program in the past, and had just recently joined our new Board of Humanities Fellows. In fact, only weeks ago he advised us on our Strategic Plan. His generosity and helpfulness, his true concern for providing opportunities, especially for historically underrepresented groups in the art world, and his unflagging kindness, energy and enthusiasm will not be forgotten.
We are pleased to announce the July 2020 publication of Doing Public Humanities, edited by the Center for Public Humanities' former Director, Professor Susan Smulyan, by Routledge Press. The book’s essays, written by faculty and staff at the Center, are essential reading for students, faculty and practitioners in public history, historic preservation, the history of art, engaged sociology and public archaeology and anthropology.
