Please join us for a “What I Am Thinking About Now” presentation by Enongo Lamumba-Kasongo, Gateway Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Music, Brown University, titled “On Insecure, Cultural Appropriation, and Hip Hop Feminist Game Design.”
Abstract: In this talk, Dr. Lumumba-Kasongo will be discussing the process of designing a rap composition feature in the mobile game for the HBO scripted series Insecure. She will offer that Black girl gaming practices represent an under-researched, yet productive site for examining many broader cultural conversations about issues of cultural appropriation that have emerged across apps like TikTok and Instagram. The talk will conclude by proposing how this game might offer a promising site of resistance as a rare game property in which hip-hop feminism takes centerstage.
“What I Am Thinking About Now” is an on-going informal workshop/seminar series to which faculty and graduate students are invited to present and discuss recently published work and work in progress. All are invited to attend and participate.
