Please join us for a “What I Am Thinking About Now” presentation by Helina Metaferia, Mellon Gateway Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Visual Art at Brown University.
Helina Metaferia will present her multi-channel video art project, (Middle) Passage for Dreams, which is currently presented as a solo exhibition at New York University’s The Gallatin Galleries through April 7, 2021. The project features Black bodies at rest in benevolent landscapes while discussing assorted contemporary topics, including notions of empowerment, existentialism, and what it means to be Black in America at this time. The video and its installation reclaim Black bodies from the spectacle of death and trauma that are continuously circulating in our screen-dependant era. The work interrogates land marked by America’s violent history (i.e. Black bodies on the ground and police brutality, Black bodies against trees and lynching, Black bodies in water and the transatlantic slave trade, Black bodies on plantations). The project was filmed over a three year period at sites across the United States in all four seasons.
“What I Am Thinking About Now” is an on-going informal workshop/seminar series to which faculty and graduate students are invited to present and discuss recently published work and work in progress. All are invited to attend and participate.
