Nandita Das, who rose to worldwide fame in her role in films like Fire, Earth, Bawander, and Before the Rains, presented her directorial debut film Firaaq at the Feminist & Women’s Media Festival on March 14. Firaaq, which premiered in 2008, is set a month after the 2002 Gujarat riots and chronicles the traumas and everyday losses of its characters on either side of the religious divide.
Following the screening, Das delivered the festival keynote and discussed making art with a social consciousness. More about her speech and commitment to making a difference can be found here.
Feminist and Women's Media Festival was organized by graduate students in the departent of Modern Culture and Media, Lakshmi Padmanabhan, Brandy Monk-Payton, Rijuta Mehta, Maggie Hennefeld and Beth Capper, along with faculty sponsor Lynne Joyrich.
