The Crisis within a Crisis: A Panel Discussion on COVID-19 and Renters in Rhode Island

This past summer, Amelia Anthony (’22) and Phoebe Ayres (’20.5) conducted research on the impact of COVID-19 on renters in Providence and Rhode Island. They used survey collection, GIS analysis, and interviews with local housing justice advocates and activists to find that renters are struggling to pay rent due to the COVID-19 related job loss, and COVID-19 has catalyzed national attention given to the eviction crisis. Their report recommends several policy and budget changes to be made by the Providence City Council and Rhode Island State Legislature. This project was part of an ongoing exploration by Urban Studies students into the eviction and housing crisis in Rhode Island.

Panelists include Phoebe and Amelia, featuring guest Devra Levy of the Tenant Network Rhode Island, and other Rhode Island housing advocates.

A summary of their work was published in the Indy.
