David Winton Bell Gallery

Collection Overview Drawings

The drawing collection is small but diverse, containing works by nineteenth- and early twentieth-century masters such as Auguste Renoir, Henri Matisse, Ernst Ludwig Kirschner, and James Abbott McNeill Whistler, and contemporary works by Terry Winters, Mel Bochner, Barry Le Va, Richard Artschwager, and Dorothea Rockburne, among others. The collection contains an exceptional drawing by Diego Rivera, a study for the Detroit Industry mural (1932-33), given to the university by the artist in 1935. Works on paper by Providence-based, nationally acclaimed artists Richard Fleischner and Howard Ben Tre are also part of the collection. Recent acquisitions include drawings by Beth Van Hoesen, Denise Green, Kirsten Hassenfeld, and Nicaraguan artist Farley Aquilar.
