The David Winton Bell Gallery and the Department of Visual Art present the work of thirty-seven artists in Brown’s 38th annual Student Exhibition, on view at the Bell Gallery from Saturday, February 24 to Sunday, March 1, 2017. A reception will be held Friday, February 23, from 7:00pm until 9:00pm. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. 

The juried exhibition is open to all Brown University students, regardless of concentration, and encourages artists to submit work in a variety of media. Surveying the visual artwork of students at Brown, the exhibition highlights the range of approaches by and techniques through which students are sharing their experiences and engaging the world around them.

The thirty-seven artists represented in the exhibition are: Lu Adami, Anzia Anderson, Natasha Boyko, Keri Brooks, Ciprian Buzila, Bella Carlos, Kat Chavez, Ava Code-Williams, Eren Derman, Zack Even, Elodie Freymann, Mae Fullerton, Devin Graham, Cynthia Guo, Sophie Houser, Zev Izenberg, Eddie Jiao, Laura Kenney, Claudia Liu, Bex Neuman-Hammond, Ade Osinubi, Odemi Pessu, Briana Pickens, Gala Prudent, Mariana Isabel Ramos Ortiz, Ernesto Renda, Michelle Schein, David Schurman, Jorge Sibaja, Emily Sun, Hang My Tran, Camille Tulloss, Aimee Vue, Ashley Waldron, Theadora Walsh, Kelly Wang, Tina Yang.

Sophia Narrett and Kalia Brooks are this year’s jurors. 

Sophia Narrett uses embroidery to tell stories about love and desire. She received her MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and her BA in Visual Arts from Brown University. She has participated in residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Museum of Arts and Design, and has shown work nationally and internationally. Her work is currently on view in Stranger than Paradise at the RISD Museum and NSFW: Female Gaze at the Museum of Sex in NY. In May 2018 she will have a solo exhibition at BRIC Arts | Media House in Brooklyn, NY. Narrett lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.

Kalia Brooks Nelson, PhD, is a New York based independent curator and writer. Brooks is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Photography and Imaging at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Brooks holds a Ph.D. in Aesthetics and Art Theory from the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts. She received her M.A. in Curatorial Practice from the California College of the Arts in 2006, and was a Helena Rubinstein Fellow in Critical Studies at the Whitney Independent Study Program 2007/2008. She has served as a consulting curator with the City of New York through the Department of Cultural Affairs and Gracie Mansion Conservancy. Brooks is also currently an ex-officio trustee on the Board of the Museum of the City of New York.
