Original Press Release:

The Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life

February 6, 2018

Today we are pleased to announce the establishment of SPRLAB—Brown’s Spiritual and Religious Life Advisory Board and to invite membership from all segments of the Brown community—staff, students’ faculty and alumni/ae to serve for two year terms of service to begin this term—Spring 2018.

SPRLAB’s creation follows the two-year pilot project affectionately known as IRWG--The Inter-Religious Working Group.  IRWG was created in the winter of 2016 by Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life as a preliminary advisory structure.  The worth of this structure was quickly evident and we are building on those strengths as we establish SPRLAB.

SPRLAB will work collaboratively to think strategically, to advise, and to advocate for the University’s spiritual and religious life and work of the Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life.  As OCRL’s DIAP is implemented the SPRLAB will collaborate with the Chaplains to assess, to review and to advise proactively on matters of religion, religious identity, and spiritual practice. These efforts will endeavor to monitor and to enhance Brown’s diversity; to strengthen the campus climate; and to monitor and to assess resources and systems for religious accommodation, literacy, and practice in the Brown community.

The membership for SPRLAB will include:

(>6) student members from the breadth of campus diversity and an application process;

(>2) staff and administrative colleagues beyond OCRL.

(>2) faculty from all schools and segments of the curriculum

(>2) alumni/ae/parents with interest/ knowledge of Brown’s Religious and Spiritual Life

Members will be appointed for two years and appointments are renewable.

Meetings of SPRLAB will occur Fall, Winter and Spring with committee and working group meetings and updates in the interim.  (The first supper meeting will be on February 26th from 5:30-7:30 at the Brown Faculty Club. )

Selection favors applicants with knowledge of and experience in campus and global religious communities; commitment to inter-religious discourse and an accommodating and inclusive campus climate; the promotion of religious literacy education.

While we hope that membership on SPRLAB will be of particular interest to religiously/spiritually identified students, applications are open to all.  Religious identity is not a requirement.  Those with capacity for navigating intersectionality in identity will provide critical strengths to SPRLAB.
