Faculty: Syllabus Statement

A syllabus statement, addressing students with disabilities, will let them know that while you are approachable and willing to work with them. It is the student's responsibility to communicate their needs to you in advance. The syllabus statement might read:

"Brown University is committed to full inclusion of all students. Students who, by nature of a documented disability, require academic accommodation. Please inform me at the beginning of the semester and send your approved accommodation letters through the SAS Online Portal. You may speak with me after class, during office hours, or by appointment. If you need accommodations around online learning or in classroom accommodations, please be sure to reach out to Student Accessibility Services (SAS) for assistance. Students in need of short-term academic advice or support can contact one of the academic deans in the College should contact the professor during office hours. Students may also speak with Student Accessibility Services at 401-863-9588  or email [email protected] to discuss the process for requesting accommodations."

An alternative wording:

"ACCOMMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES:  Any student with a documented disability is welcome to contact me as early in the semester as possible so that we may arrange reasonable accommodations. If stuents have questions about accommodations please email Student Accessibility Services at [email protected] or call 401-863-9588.  Students may send faculty their approved accommodation letters to faculty through the SAS Online Portal:  https://seasonline.brown.edu/ClockWork/custom/misc/home.aspx . "

Faculty may consult with SAS at any time regarding syllabus statements or any other disability-related matter.
