Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: I have many more questions about the Echoing Green Social Entrepreneurship Internship Program.  Who can I talk to?

A: Please contact Greg Seiler with BrownConnect at [email protected].

Q: Can I receive academic credit for the internship?

A: Brown does not offer academic credit for internships.  Students may choose to work with an academic department and register for an independent study aligning with the internship experience in the semester following the internship.

Q:  Are there language requirements to participate?

A:  All internship positions will require English only, unless otherwise noted in the job description.  Other language proficiencies may strengthen an applicant’s application.

Q: Do I need to interview for the internship?

A: Host employers and students are encouraged to meet via Skype or other video chat service for an interview.  This is an opportunity for the employer to learn more about the student intern and for the student intern to learn more about the position and ask for any clarifications about the work involved.

Q: What information should I include in the cover letter?

A: The cover letter gives the employer a better understanding of who you are as a Brown student, young professional and individual.  Although the focus of the statement should demonstrate your interest and qualifications for the positions, you may also want to mention other information about your interest in the host country/city, your career ambitions, how the internship aligns with your academic work and why this particular opportunity would be good fit for you professionally, academically and personally. Cover letters may be addressed to the “Hiring Manager.”

Q: Can I apply to more than one internship position?

A: Yes - you can apply to two companies to improve your chances of being selected.  You will be considered for your first choice of internship before any secondary choices.  There is no guarantee your second choice employer will receive your materials.

Q: What if I do not have a passport or my passport is expiring this year?

A: You will be required to provide a copy of a valid passport upon acceptance to the program.  Your passport should be valid for at least six months following the conclusion of the internship.  Apply for a passport or renewal immediately. Do not wait to apply for a passport or passport renewal until you are accepted for an internship, as it may be too late to start the application process for a visa/work permit.  Contact Greg at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Q: Do I need a work permit or Visa?

A: This depends on your nationality and the location of the internship.  Check the consulate website for the country you’re interested in or contact Greg at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Q: What are the working hours?

A: Interns are expected to work full-time during the dates of the internship.  Hours may vary by employer. Interns are required to work the entire duration of the internship with any days off approved in advance by a supervisor.  Students are encouraged to travel for tourism or pleasure before or after the internship and not during the internship.

Q: What if I am graduating before the summer internship?

A: To be eligible to participate, students must be enrolled at Brown as a degree-seeking student in the fall semester following the summer internship.

Q: Can I change the dates of the internship or extend the internship dates?

A: Any changes must be approved by the program and the internship host employer.

Q: Will I meet with other participants on the Echoing Green Social Entrepreneurship Internship Program

A: A pre-departure orientation will be held late in the spring semester for all participants on the program.  The meeting will cover program expectations, travel preparation, and internship best practices. Participation at this pre-departure meeting is mandatory and will allow you to meet other students.  Unless other students are interning with the same organization or in the same city, it is unlikely that you will meet other participants from this program during the internship.

Q: What if I need to leave early or quit my internship?

A: Whether initiated by the employer or the student, if an internship position is ended early you may be expected to return a prorated portion of the internship stipend.  Please let your supervisor and the Internship Program know as soon as possible.

Q: Can I apply for funding for an internship or host employer not participating in the internship program?

A: No, however your internship may be eligible to be funded through the LINK internship funding award.

Q: I missed the application deadline, can I still apply?

A: You may still be considered for one of the internships only if a suitable candidate was not found by the company after reviewing and interviewing candidates.  Please contact a program staff to discuss your eligibility.

Q: I already received funding from LINK, CCG in NYC, iProv, Media in LA or a different BrownConnect Signature program in a previous summer.  Am I eligible for this program?

A: No.  Students may not have previously received funding through the above internship programs to be eligible for the Echoing Green Social Entrepreneurship Internship Program.

Q: What if I am studying abroad in the semester before the summer program?

A: As long as your semester ends with enough time to start your internship, students studying abroad may still participate.  Exceptional preparedness and responsiveness will be required of the student to successfully schedule interviews and submit visa documentation, if necessary.

Q: Can I apply to multiple BrownConnect Signature Programs?

A: As long as you have not previously received a BrownConnect Summer Internship award, through a Signature program or LINK award, you can apply to multiple signature programs for the upcoming summer.  Follow the specific restrictions and process for each program.
