Appointments at CAPS are free of charge for enrolled Brown students, as part of your Health Services Fee.
We do not ordinarily make appointments or communicate with students via email for confidentiality reasons.
To make an appointment during Fall and Spring semesters
Please call our office at (401) 863-3476 or come to J. Walter Wilson Room 512 during regular business hours, Monday - Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
A referral from a staff therapist or a local community therapist is required to make an initial appointment with a psychiatrist.
When a student calls for an appointment, an intake is scheduled with one of the therapists on staff. At the end of the initial visit, the student and the clinician decide whether to schedule further appointments. If the clinician and student decide that ongoing therapy is indicated, referrals are provided for nearby community psychotherapists. The maximum number of sessions with a clinician at CAPS is seven per academic year. If appropriate, a medication consultation may be scheduled with one of our staff psychiatrists.
In urgent situations, when you call, let us know that you need more immediate attention. Crisis assistance is available when the office is closed.
Brown faculty and staff
If you are a Brown employee wanting assistance for yourself, a household member, or your immediate family in handling a personal problem, you are invited to use the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP). Support services include personal counseling as well as resources to help with financial and legal concerns; dependent care; and a variety of health issues.
