Academic year 2017-2018

Key dates for the coming academic year are listed below. Please note that final exam dates are set by the Registrar and cannot be moved. Students should plan to leave campus the day after their last scheduled final exam.

Fall 2017

Aug 30, 2017 Wed Undergraduates studying at Brown on an F-1 visa should arrive to participate in international student orientation. Incoming first-year and transfer students who self-identify as international, regardless of citizenship or residency (including in the United States), should attend International Orientation. Students studying at Brown on a visa are expected to attend.
Sep 2, 2017 Saturday Orientation begins for new undergraduate students
Pre-Orientation programs begin earlier
Sep 3, 2017 Sunday Residence halls reopen for returning students
Sept 6, 2017 Wednesday First day of classes
Oct 9, 2017 Monday Indigenous Peoples' Day
No classes
CLOSED Monday: Academic and administrative offices.
OPEN: Emergency services, residence halls, Meal Plan service.
October 13-15,  2017 Friday - Sunday Family Weekend
October 10 2017 Date by which sophomores entering their 5th semester must file their concentration declaration forms via ASK to avoid having a "No Concentration" hold placed against their Banner registration. (5:00 pm deadline).
Nov 22-26, 2017 Wed-Sun Thanksgiving recess begins Wed at noon
CLOSED: Thursday through Sunday: Academic and administrative offices.
OPEN: Emergency services, residence halls, Meal Plan service.
Dec 8, 2017 Fri Reading Period begins (option and at the discretion of the instructor)
Dec 13-21, 2017 Wed-Thu

Final exam period. Exam periods are 9am-noon and 2pm-5pm.

The Final Exam Schedule is available on the Registrar's site. Students must sit for exams at the times designated for each course. Students should plan to leave campus the day after their last scheduled final exam and delay making travel plans until after they are certain of their exam schedule.

Dec 22, 2017 Fri 9am Residence Halls Close for winter break. Students for whom extenuating circumstances require them to seek housing during the winter break must contact Residential Life to discuss options.

Spring 2018

Jan 20, 2018 Sat Residence Halls reopen for spring semester
Jan 24, 2018 Wed Spring semester classes begin
Feb 17-20, 2018 Sat-Tues

Long weekend holiday

No classes. Administrative offices open.

Mar 24-Apr 1, 2018 Sat-Sun

Spring Break

CLOSED: Meal Plan service. Spring Break Meal Plan available.
OPEN:  Emergency services, residence halls, academic and administrative offices (including Health Services).
