Wednesday, August 30: Move-In Day

Welcome Check-In and Information Desk

8:00 AM – 7:00 PM (P)
Check in, pick up International Orientation program materials, and meet some of your friendly IMP mentors. Please be sure to bring some form of photo identification- a passport, driver's license or school ID will work perfectly!
Faunce Arch (Stephen Robert '62 Campus Center, 75 Waterman Street)

* After 7 PM, students should contact the Department of Public Safety at 401-863-3322 or visit 75 Charlesfield Street to gain access to their residence hall room.  Keys can also be collected on Thursday September 1st, beginning at 8:30 AM onwards at the Welcome Desk at the Soldier’s Arch, Thayer Street (Entrance to Ruth J. Simmons Quadrangle / Lincoln Quadrangle).

Passport Registration (mandatory for all visa students)

9:00 AM – 4:00 PM (P)
Stop by during this time on Wednesday or Thursday to register with the Office of International Student and Scholar Services (OISSS). Be sure to bring your passport, I-20 and I-94 printout with you.

Trips to Providence Place Mall

Join mentors on a walk that will pass by the Kennedy Plaza bus central on the way to the mall for shopping.

Explore Brown’s Libraries and Rare Books Collection

1:15 PM – 2:15 PM (P)
Take a tour of Brown’s libraries led by some of our beloved library faculty. Become acquainted with the libraries’ resources, visit their open stacks, and peruse through Brown’s rare book collection.
Meet in the lobby of the Rockefeller Library, 10 Prospect Street

Campus Tours

First Tour: 1:15 PM – 2:00 PM (P)
Second Tour: 5:15 PM – 6:00 PM (P)
Familiarize yourself with Brown and join us for tours of the main campus area. This is an additional tour time added for International Orientation. Families and students may also go on tours daily all week at 11:00 AM or 3:00 PM departing from Faunce Arch; please check-in at the Welcome and Information Center inside the Stephen Robert '62 Campus Center.
Each tour departs from Faunce Arch (Stephen Robert '62 Campus Center) at 1:15 pm and 5:15 pm. 

Welcome to IMP! (mandatory)

6:00 PM – 6:30 PM
A welcoming ceremony for all IMP participants. This is the official start of our year-long program!

Meet your IMP mentor and get to know your mentor group before heading together to dinner.

Join your mentor group for dinner. Get to know each other over some food - this will be the first of many mentor group dinners that you will have throughout the year.

Academic Conventions and Writing in the United States

Prepare for your time at Brown through presentations about academic conventions in the United States. These brief presentations will highlight academic integrity expectations, norms for different disciplines, and an exploration of the academic writing process. This program is for all international students -- with opportunities tailored to various levels of familiarity with US academic culture.

Lunch with Brown Faculty

We asked international students to nominate their favorite faculty -- and now you get to have lunch with them! Hear directly from the faculty what the classroom environment is like, talk about your academic interests (and theirs!), and experience first-hand how accessible Brown's faculty are to undergraduates.

Staying Legal: Immigration 101 (mandatory for all visa students)

Learn everything you need to know about visas, employment, social security, among other topics related to immigration, and ask any questions you may have. This mandatory event is led by Elke Breker, Director of the Office for International Students and Scholars.

Regroup with your mentor group, for a check-in and a chance to share some thoughts and ask questions.

Join mentors and classmates for a meal at the Sharpe Refactory, affectionately known as "the Ratty"! We will be in Back Alcove, which is found at the back of the Ratty if you walk forward when you enter.
Note:  Parents and family members must pay. Students can use their meal plan.

Academic Conventions and Writing in the US,  Part Two

Rejoin the English Language Learning staff to learn more about the cultural and linguistic norms of academic writing in the United States. This session will provide a space to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and think critically about what "good writing" looks like at the university level. Sign-up will be available at the end of Friday's session.

Join staff of Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, and other experts on a Q+A panel discussion on what it means to be healthy at Brown.

We will all come together to take a huge photo of this year's IMP participants. Then just relax on the Main Green with your mentors, either by laying back and chatting or playing a game of ultimate frisbee or football/soccer.
