10/23/18 Update: The LGBTQ Center will host a Community Check-in event for community members that are Trans/GNC and allies on Tuesday, October 30 from 6 pm - 8 pm in the LGBTQ Center lounge. The purpose of this space is to vent out frustrations, envision possible futures and show support to one another. Community resources and refreshments will be provided.
To of our trans, nonbinary, gender non-conforming, gender diverse, and gender questioning family, friends, students, and colleagues: as we learn about the newest cissexist and transphobic policy being proposed by the federal government the Brown LGBTQ Center wants to let you know that we see you and we support you! We will stay on top of this issue and work with you to help you navigate challenges as new developments arise. If you would like to speak with someone or are in need of any type of support please email [email protected] and/or [email protected] and we will schedule a time to meet with you. If you have an urgent need to speak with someone, especially when the LGBTQ Center is closed, we encourage you to utilize Brown Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) urgent assistance resources. In addition to urgent assistance, CAPS facilitates a Gender Diversity group on Thursdays from noon-1:00 p.m. in the Sarah Doyle Center lounge. No RSVP is necessary. For more information, you may contact [email protected].
The LGBTQ Center would like to highlight a community resource, the TGI Network of Rhode Island. Also on Facebook: TGI Network. This organization facilitates support groups and plans events throughout Rhode Island. If you would like to attend an event but you are having difficulty affording transportation please email [email protected] to request information about local travel reimbursement.
On Saturday, November 3rd from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. the Rhode Island community is planning a rally at the RI State House titled: We Will Not Be Erased! Rally For Transgender Rights. We will continue to provide information as it becomes available.
One additional resource for anyone who may need it is the Trans Lifeline, a national trans-led organization dedicated to responding to the critical needs of the trans community. The hotline number in the U.S. is 877-565-8860 and in Canada is 877-330-6366.
The LGBTQ Center will be announcing upcoming programs soon. If you have ideas for programs and/or would like to assist us please let us know. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any reason. We are here to support you!
