What/when were you at Brown?

Graduate student. 1990-1995.

What do you do now? Provide a brief description of what you do for a living and what drives you professionally.

I lead Research and Development for an emerging biotech company that is focused on creating novel medicines for people with a variety of brain disorders, such as Autism, Schizophrenia and Depression. I'm driven by a desire to create and apply knowledge to improve the lives of individuals, their families and society at-large.

How did your experience at Brown (in the lab, in the classroom, and in the Brown community) prepare you for what you do today?

I selected Brown because I valued being part of a community that viewed knowledge as a source for positive change. As a young scientist, I learned that the measure of scientific growth was the ability to ask the right questions rather than master a new technique. Scientific progress will always be guided by the introduction of novel methods and technologies, but true breakthroughs are created by individuals who deploy such advances at the service of an important scientific problem. I also learned that scientific excellence could be defined by cooperation and collaboration instead of competition. I have carried these principles forward throughout my professional journey and continue to apply them in my everyday work.
