Drew Linsley

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Drew Linsley, and I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow associated with the Brown Institute for Brain Science (BIBS) and the Initiative for Computation in Brain and Mind (CBM).

Where are you from?

I’m originally from Seattle, WA, but ended up on the east coast to go to undergrad at Hamilton College. I loved it so much I stayed out here after graduation, eventually ending up at Boston College for my PhD, where I studied cognitive and computational neuroscience with Dr. Sean MacEvoy.

What do you like to do other than research?

I have the most amazing wife and dog in the world. Time not spent working is time spent with them: exploring PVD, reading, cooking, and hanging at the waterman street dog park.

What research do you do?

I came to Brown to work with my advisor, Dr. Thomas Serre, who is an expert in both computational neuroscience and biologically-inspired approaches to artificial intelligence (AI). With Dr. Serre’s guidance, I have had the opportunity to develop a research program for understanding the human visual system that sits at the interface between Neuroscience and AI. On the one hand, developing algorithms for AI and computer vision that draw from our understanding of the visual system, and on the other hand applying these algorithms to neural recordings to gain insight into brain function.

Why did you chose to come to Brown?

The opportunity to come to Brown was a no-brainer. Its combination of leading minds across Neuroscience and AI, opportunities for collaboration, and support for trainees made it the perfect fit for me, giving me special opportunities for groundbreaking research and jumpstarting my career as an academic.
