What/when were you at Brown?

Undergraduate. 1964-1968.

What do you do now? Provide a brief description of what you do for a living and what drives you professionally.

I am a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Neuroscience Program at the University of Washington in Seattle. I recently completed a long tenure as Chair of Pharmacology. I am now continuing to pursue my research on brain ion channels and related neuropsychiatric diseases and my teaching in pharmacology and neuroscience.

How did your experience at Brown (in the lab, in the classroom, and in the Brown community) prepare you for what you do today?

My undergraduate research project as a Chemistry major gave me my first taste of research through my studies of membrane proteins in red blood cells for my senior thesis. My classes in chemistry provided excellent background for further studies in biochemistry and pharmacology as a graduate student and postdoctoral fellow. My classes in Biology gave me my first introduction to Neuroscience, as there was no separate Neuroscience Program at Brown (or elsewhere) in those days.
