CLACS Alumna wins Fulbright

May 21, 2019

Camille Garnsey, CLACS '17 was recently awarded a Fulbright Open Study Research grant to Argentina. Her project will examine the rise of the domestic violence advocacy movement in Latin America and its relationship to the ongoing abortion legalization effort in Argentina through a public health lens.

By conducting interviews with activists, public health professionals, and community members in Buenos Aires, she plans to evaluate the role that public health rhetoric has played in bolstering and aligning the these core feminist issues and consider the implications of this strategy for activism in Latin America and beyond. While at Brown, Camille, who double concentrated in CLACS and Public Health, conducted research on reproductive health access in Havana, Cuba as a research fellow at Casa de Las Americas, and contributed to the development and evaluation of a peer support program for survivors of domestic violence through her work with HAVEN, a domestic violence advocacy organization in her hometown of Bozeman, MT.

Since graduating in 2017, Camille has worked at Ibis Reproductive Health, where she has contributed to research projects focused on reducing abortion-related stigma in Latin America, documenting the use of telemedicine for medication abortion provision in the US, and analyzing women’s experiences traveling for abortion care in Europe.
