    Commencement Procession

    Faunce Arch

    The walk through the Van Wickle Gates, one of Brown’s oldest and greatest traditions, brings together the entire Brown community. The procession steps off from Waterman Street, north of Faunce Arch. Graduate degree candidates line up by 9 a.m. on Simmons Quad. Medical degree candidates by 9:15 am at Faunce Arch. Undergraduates line up by 9:30 a.m.

    Medical School Commencement Ceremony and Awarding of Degrees

    First Unitarian Church of Providence

    Doors will open at 9:15 am for general seating. Jack A. Elias, MD, Dean of Medicine and Biological Sciences, will preside. The faculty address will be delivered by Allan Tunkel, M.D., and the class address by Jonathan Staloff ’19 M.D. Immediately following the Medical School ceremony, a post-graduation reception for Medical School faculty, graduates, and their families will be held at the Hope Club, across the street from the First Unitarian Church.

    The Graduate School Masters Ceremony

    The Graduate School masters ceremony. This Graduate School ceremony for masters and executive masters students, their families and friends features the awarding of degrees and honors. Associate Dean of Masters Education Shayna Kessel presides.

    College Ceremony

    First Baptist Church

    This ceremony takes place on the grounds of the First Baptist Church in America. President Christina Paxson presides. The ceremony is videocast to the College Green, Salomon Center for Teaching and Sayles Hall.

    Diploma Ceremonies


    Following the conclusion of the University ceremony, graduating seniors and their families attend department-specific diploma ceremonies and receptions at which students are awarded their diplomas individually. Families and graduating seniors are strongly encouraged to meet at the location of their diploma ceremony rather than trying to locate each other on the College Green. Refreshments are served at the diploma ceremonies.
