Welcome to the Fall International Orientation (IO) 2022 Page! We here in the Global Brown Center for International Students are so excited to welcome the Class of 2026 for the 2022-2023 academic year.
What is International Orientation?
International Orientation is a pre-orientation program for undergraduate international students to begin learning about Brown’s campus, academic and co-curricular offerings, as well as building relationships with other international students prior to New Student Orientation.
Participating in International Orientation will allow international students to explore topics that are relevant to their experience, such as life in the United States, setting up a U.S. bank account or cell phone, immigration and employment resources, and navigating academics as an international student. More importantly, IO provides the opportunity for international students to begin building community and social support networks early in their college experience.
Who facilitates International Orientation?
International Orientation is facilitated by the International Mentoring Program, a cohort of current Brown students supervised by the Global Brown Center for International Students that offers peer mentorship support to incoming international students at Brown.
Who can participate in International Orientation?
Here in the Global Brown Center, we understand that “international” means many things. An international student can be an F-1/J-1 visa holder, a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who grew up or went to school outside of the United States, or a student who grew up in one or more countries outside their passport country! International Orientation is meant to support Brown students who have any of these experiences. If this sounds like a program that would be useful for you, you are welcome to register! Students who are on F-1/J-1 visas are required to attend IO.
When is International Orientation?
International Orientation will begin on Monday, August 29th, 2022 and end on Wednesday, August 31st, 2022.
When should International Orientation participants move into their residence hall?
International students participating in IMP / International Orientation will be able to move in on Sunday, August 28th to ensure they can participate fully in the program.
How do I register for International Orientation?
Registration for International Orientation is now closed.
Will there be any programming for parents and family members during International Orientation?
Yes, parents and family members are welcome to join us on Tuesday, August 30th for a welcome brunch, two informational panels, and an evening reception. Please see the complete Parents & Family Schedule here.
Will there be transportation from the airport to campus for IO participants?
We will have Brown University Shuttles going to and from two arrival locations in Providence: T.F. Green Airport or the Providence Station (train). The shuttles will be available on August 28th and August 29th from 9:00am - 6:00pm. If you are arriving at one of these two locations and want to sign up for the shuttle, please email [email protected]. For additional transportation resources, please click here.
What is happening during International Orientation?
Sunday, August 28th is move-in day! We’ll have Brown University shuttles going to and from the Providence Amtrak Station and TF Green airport to campus. We’ll also have buses to take folks shopping for dorm essentials at night!
Monday, August 29th is the first day of IO. A few additional folks will be moving in, so we’ll have optional tours of campus, events by the Office of Sustainability, and a cellphone and banking fair during the day. Our program will officially launch at 6pm with our “Welcome to IMP event” where you’ll meet your mentor and learn more about what’s ahead!
Tuesday, August 30th is the second day of IO and it’s jam-packed with opportunities to learn about academics and student life at Brown. Start off the day by visiting various campus life centers, a welcome brunch, and several informational panels and events for parents and family. We’ll finish off the day with our traditional IMP Race and Talent Show!
Wednesday, August 31st is the last day of IO and we have additional informational events about resources at Brown for international students, a lunch with Brown faculty and staff, and several opportunities to bond with your mentor and fellow international students before general orientation begins!
