Measuring Overweight and Obesity

There is a lack of comprehensive data on BMI for Rhode Island children. To determine whether it is feasible to create such a source, several agencies partnered gathered height and weight data for children aged 2-17. The Hassenfeld Child Health Innovation Institute’s Data Core assessed how representative the data were of Rhode Island, comparing the demographic characteristics of the children with BMI data to published census data. Additional analyses were completed, identifying current overweight and obesity rates for the state, as well as by city, race/ethnicity, gender, age, and insurance coverage.
