Green Event Certification

What is Green Event?

Green Event is a student-driven initiative to promote and facilitate sustainable event planning at Brown University.

We're supporting the growth of Brown's environmentally friendly culture by making it easy to adopt eco-conscious practices.

Our certification program is a simple framework for reducing waste, lowering our carbon footprint, supporting local businesses, and educating consumers.

Green Event is supported by the Office of Energy & Environment in the Department of Facilities Management.

How to certify your event

  1. Request a consultation, preferably in the early stages of event planning.

  2. At your initial 20-minute meeting, a Green Event Consultant will walk you through a checklist of goals for minimizing waste and reducing your event's carbon footprint. Every event is different, so your consultant will work with you to come up with a plan of action that is tailored to your event. Together you'll set a certification goal:(silver, gold, or platinum). Green Event is piloting an on-campus system for composting at events. Participation is free of charge for all events seeking certification.

  3. The Green Event team will be available to you for the rest of your event planning process and will send you promotional materials for your event advertisements.

After your event, the Green Event team will determine your certification rating (silver, gold, or platinum). Below is a summary of the minimum requirements for certification. The Green Events team uses this framework as a guideline, and will reward those who make an extra effort to reduce their event's environmental impact.
