The Mediterranean Migration Crisis: A Clash of the Titans’ Obligations?

By the end of 2015, record numbers of irregular migrants will have crossed the Mediterranean to reach Europe. The phenomenon has become a maritime refugee crisis of historic proportions, constituting the largest wave of mass migration since World War II. As of late October 2015, some 670,000 people are estimated to have crossed the Mediterranean into Europe. Over 3,100 have died or disappeared in the process. Consequently, today the Mediterranean represents the most dangerous peacetime frontier in the world.
