Lorraine Estelle Adler grew up in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, with her mother, father, and brother. She graduated from Woonsocket High School in June 1942, just before beginning an accelerated undergraduate program at Brown University. During her time at Brown, Adler volunteered to assist the Ally forces in a program that she later learned developed radar technology. She graduated from Brown in February 1945 with a degree in art history. After a short career as an interior designer, Adler married her husband, Sidney W. Rosen, in 1947 and had her daughter, Melanie. She now resides in New York City.
