Background
Andrew Foster came to Brown in 1998 and is the founding director of the SSRI. He has served as chair of the Economics Department for eight years and as director of the Population Studies and Training Center (2011-2016). Foster serves on the steering committee of the National Bureau of Economic Research Development Section, on the board of the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development, and as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Development Economics.
Foster is an empirical microeconomist working in the areas of population, development, and environmental economics. He has particular interest in sources of long economic and social mobility in low income rural areas.
