Morayo Akande, MPH Presented at LGBTQ Health 2021 Conference

Morayo Akande, MPH, presented at the LGBTQ Health 2021 Conference. Her poster titled, "Intervention Development to Promote Safe and Affirming Sex for Transgender Women Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence" presented qualitative findings from service providers working with transgender women (TW) in Rhode Island.

This study (PI: Don Operario; NIH protocol #: R34MH119968) employs qualitative methods to describe perceptions about the dynamics between HIV risk and intimate partner violence (IPV) among TW and provide recommendations for an intervention to address these interconnected risks. Providers offered concrete recommendations to guide intervention development addressing HIV and IPV among TW. The study is currently conducting focus groups with TW who have experienced IPV, which will offer additional insight on intervention design. Development of an evidence-based program for HIV and IPV risk is a critical need to address health inequity and vulnerability in this community.
