What’s new in the MBSR Teacher Training at Brown?

The MBSR Teacher Training Program has been approved as an official Brown University Certificate Program offered by the School of Professional Studies at Brown University. Participants in the program may now earn an official “Brown University Certificate in MBSR Teaching”.

There are two new components to the program:

•       First, the program is now an official Certificate Program offered at Brown University through the School of Professional Studies.

•       Second, to earn the Certificate there are two additional programs in the pathway, “Ethos of Mindfulness-Based Programs” and “Dialogue and Inquiry for Mindfulness-Based Programs”.

When will the change to the program take place? What are the options If I am entering the MBSR Teacher Training Pathway? What if I am already in the MBSR Teacher Training Program?

The change is happening beginning with the Spring 2022 programs.

Participants starting their training in Spring 2022 or thereafter will be required to take the two new programs “Ethos of Mindfulness-Based Programs” and “Dialogue and Inquiry for Mindfulness-Based Programs” and will earn the new “Brown University Certificate in MBSR Teaching”.

Participants currently accepted into or taking programs in the MBSR Teacher Training Pathway have two options to complete their MBSR Teacher Training.

Option 1: Participants currently accepted into or taking programs can complete the pathway without taking the two new programs. Participants who complete the pathway this way will receive an “MBSR Teacher Certification.” This option is available for participants that have completed all program work and Teacher Certification Review by March 31, 2026, which is four (4) years.

Option 2: Participants currently accepted into or taking programs can complete the pathway AND the two new additional programs, “Ethos of Mindfulness-Based Programs” and “Dialogue and Inquiry for Mindfulness-Based Programs”. These participants will receive the new “Brown University Certificate in MBSR Teaching”.

Will participants that did their Teacher Certification Review at Brown and earned the “MBSR Teacher Certification” be able to earn the new “Brown University Certificate in MBSR Teaching”?

Yes! Participants will need to enroll in and successfully complete the two additional programs, “Ethos of Mindfulness-Based Programs” and “Dialogue and Inquiry for Mindfulness-Based Programs”, to earn the new “Brown University Certificate in MBSR Teaching”. This option is available for participants that have completed the two additional programs by March 31, 2026.

I previously took the “Inquiry” program. Does this count toward taking the new “Dialogue and Inquiry for Mindfulness-Based Programs” program?

Yes. The "Inquiry" program that has been offered through the Education Unit for the last three years will count toward taking the new "Dialogue and Inquiry for Mindfulness-Based Programs" program offered as part of the Certificate program.

I started my training at another institution and would like to transfer to Brown to complete the “Brown University Certificate in MBSR Teaching”. Which programs will transfer?

“MBSR Foundations” program may be transferred to be used toward the “Brown University Certificate in MBSR Teaching” if it is deemed to be equivalent to the MBSR Foundations at Brown. All other requirements of the Certificate must be completed at Brown to earn the Certificate.

One exception to this policy is if a participant has been training with a member of the Global Mindfulness Collaboarative (GMC), and applied to transfer prior to June 1, 2022, and has completed the “MBSR Teacher Advancement Intensive” with a GMC* member, then these participants will also be able to transfer credit for the “MBSR Teacher Advancement Intensive” program in addition to MBSR Foundations.

*GMC or Global Mindfulness Collaborative members are located on the Mindfulness Center at Brown’s web site.

May I take the new “Ethos of Mindfulness-Based Programs” and “Dialogue and Inquiry for Mindfulness-Based Programs” programs if I am not enrolled in the “Brown University Certificate in MBSR Teaching”?

Yes. “Ethos of Mindfulness-Based Programs” and “Dialogue and Inquiry for Mindfulness-Based Programs” are also offered as professional continuing education programs for all MBSR and MBCT teachers and teachers-in-training.
