Lisa A. Uebelacker, PhD

Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior

Biography

Dr. Uebelacker is a clinical psychologist on the faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. She is also Assistant Director of the Psychosocial Research Program at Butler Hospital. She received her doctoral degree from Yale University, which is also where she first learned about MBSR by taking an MBSR course in the nursing school.

Dr. Uebelacker has conducted several NIH-funded clinical trials of hatha yoga for depression or chronic pain.  Completed and ongoing trials focus on people with a partial response to antidepressant treatments, pregnant depressed women, adolescents with depression or stress, people with chronic pain enrolled in medication-assisted treatment for opioid disorder, and people in prison.  Yoga classes for these trials are manualized, and yoga teachers for these classes provide substantive guidance on cultivating awareness and acceptance of one’s present-moment embodied experience.
